Brick & Mortar Calculator for Wall Construction

Accurately estimating bricks, cement, and sand before starting wall construction prevents both costly material shortages mid-project and wasteful over-ordering. This calculator uses standard Indian brick masonry ratios.

Standard Brick Sizing

A standard Indian brick measures approximately 9ร—4.5ร—3 inches. Including a standard 0.5-inch mortar joint, this works out to roughly 13.5 bricks per cubic foot of wall volume for both half-brick (4.5") and full-brick (9") walls.

Mortar Mix Ratio

This calculator uses the common 1:6 cement-to-sand ratio for general brick masonry โ€” a standard, cost-effective mix for non-load-bearing walls. Load-bearing or external walls in high-rainfall areas may use a richer 1:4 or 1:5 mix for added strength.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I order extra material beyond this estimate? +
Yes โ€” always add 5-10% extra for breakage, cutting waste, and on-site contingencies. This calculator gives the theoretical minimum requirement based on wall geometry.
Does this work for AAC blocks instead of bricks? +
No โ€” AAC (Autoclaved Aerated Concrete) blocks are much larger and use a different thin-joint mortar system. This calculator is specifically for standard clay brick masonry with traditional mortar joints.
Why is the mortar ratio important? +
A richer mix (more cement, less sand) gives higher strength but costs more and can crack if used improperly. A 1:6 ratio is standard for typical residential walls; consult a structural engineer for load-bearing or seismic-zone construction.

Brick & Mortar Calculation Formula

Standard Indian brick: 230 ร— 115 ร— 75 mm. With 10mm mortar joint: effective size = 240 ร— 125 ร— 85 mm per unit. Bricks per sq metre = 50 bricks (for 115mm thick wall). Add 5โ€“10% wastage.

Worked Example

Wall: 10m ร— 3m = 30 sq m, 115mm thick. Bricks needed = 30 ร— 50 = 1,500. Add 8% wastage = 1,620 bricks. Mortar (1:6 cement:sand): approximately 0.3 bags cement + 1.5 cu ft sand per sq m = 9 bags cement + 45 cu ft sand for this wall.

Tips

  • Always add 5โ€“10% extra bricks for breakage and cuts
  • Fly ash bricks are lighter and better insulating than red clay bricks โ€” increasingly common in India
  • Get at least 3 quotes from suppliers โ€” brick prices vary significantly by location and season
