Standard Coverage Assumption
This calculator assumes 1 litre of paint covers approximately 120 sq.ft per coat — a typical figure for emulsion paints on previously painted, smooth walls. Textured walls, new plaster (which absorbs more paint), or budget paints may have lower coverage.
Why Most Rooms Need 2 Coats
A single coat rarely gives uniform, opaque color coverage, especially over a different existing color or new plaster. Two coats is the standard recommendation for most residential painting jobs; three coats may be needed for dramatic color changes (e.g., dark to light).

Paintable Area = 2×(L+W)×H − Doors − Windows
Paint needed = Area ÷ Coverage per litre × Number of coats
Worked Example
Room 12×10 ft, 9 ft ceiling. Total wall area = 2×(12+10)×9 = 396 sq ft. Minus 2 doors (35 sq ft each) and 2 windows (15 sq ft each): 396 − 70 − 30 = 296 sq ft. At 150 sq ft/litre per coat, 2 coats: 296 ÷ 150 × 2 = 3.95 litres. Buy 4L.
