Key Changes in FY 2025-26 vs FY 2024-25
Budget 2025 made the new tax regime significantly more attractive: Standard deduction increased from ₹50,000 to ₹75,000, 87A rebate increased from ₹25,000 to ₹60,000 making income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free (was ₹7L earlier), and a new slab of 25% for ₹20-24L was introduced. These changes effectively gave zero-tax benefit to 3 crore+ additional taxpayers who were previously paying some tax.
How to Calculate Your Income Tax — Step by Step
Step 1: Start with gross total income (salary + other income). Step 2: Subtract standard deduction (₹75K new regime, ₹50K old). Step 3: Subtract applicable deductions (only in old regime: 80C, HRA, home loan, 80D). Step 4: Apply tax slabs on remaining taxable income. Step 5: Apply 87A rebate if eligible. Step 6: Add 4% health and education cess. Result = Total tax payable.
Surcharge on Income Tax FY 2025-26
For high incomes, surcharge is added on top of regular tax: 10% surcharge if total income is ₹50L-₹1Cr. 15% if ₹1Cr-₹2Cr. 25% if ₹2Cr-₹5Cr. 25% if above ₹5Cr (new regime — reduced from 37% which was earlier applicable). Cess of 4% applies on tax + surcharge. This means effective tax rate can exceed 30% for very high incomes.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the tax on ₹12 lakh salary?▼
New regime: ₹12L salary - ₹75K SD = ₹11.25L taxable. Tax = ₹52,500. 87A rebate covers it fully → ZERO TAX. Old regime: ₹12L - ₹50K SD = ₹11.5L taxable (without deductions). Tax = ₹1,17,000. Old regime is ₹1.17L more expensive without deductions.

New regime: ₹15L - ₹75K = ₹14.25L taxable. Tax = ₹60K (on ₹0-12L) + ₹33,750 (15% on ₹12-14.25L) = ₹93,750 + cess ₹3,750 = ₹97,500. Old regime with ₹3.5L deductions: tax ≈ ₹85,000-95,000. Both similar — calculate using our tool for your exact deductions.
When does 30% tax slab start in new regime?▼
30% tax slab starts at taxable income above ₹24 lakh in new regime. For a salaried person with standard deduction: gross salary above ₹24.75L brings 30% slab into play. This is much higher than old regime where 30% started at ₹10L — a significant relief.
