Tax Year 2026-27: Salary TDS is estimated using the central CalcuTools Tax Engine. The current salary-tax engine uses the verified AY 2026-27 slab/cess records as its calculation basis; this is an estimate and should not be treated as a complete replacement for payroll-specific Tax Year 2026-27 rules. From 1 April 2026, TDS provisions operate under the Income Tax Act, 2025. For non-salary payments, the applicable provision depends on the payment/credit date and the relevant table under section 393. The legacy section labels below are retained only as familiar references.

TDS क्या होता है? (What is TDS?)

(How to Avoid TDS)

Form 15G / 15H: If your total income is below taxable limit, submit Form 15G (below 60 yrs) or Form 15H (senior citizens) to your bank — zero TDS on FD interest.
Salary TDS: Declare all investments (80C, HRA, home loan) to HR at start of year — reduces TDS from salary.
Refund: If excess TDS deducted, file ITR and claim refund. Usually credited in 3-4 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

TDS on Salary Formula

TDS = Estimated annual tax ÷ 12 (monthly estimate)
Annual tax is estimated from the selected Tax Year 2026-27 regime, standard deduction and eligible declared deductions.
Employer adjusts TDS in Q4 based on actual proofs submitted.

Worked Example

Salary TDS is an estimate of the employee's projected annual tax liability divided across the remaining payroll months. Actual payroll withholding can differ because employers reconcile projected income, declarations, prior deductions and payroll timing.

TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) is tax deducted before income reaches you. Rates: Salary (section 392): based on the employee's estimated taxable salary and applicable tax regime; FD interest (194A): 10% if interest > ₹40,000/year; Rent (194I): 10% if > ₹50,000/month; Professional fees (194J): 10% if > ₹30,000/year.
If TDS deducted exceeds your actual tax liability, you get a refund by filing ITR. Example: employer deducted ₹50,000 TDS but your actual tax = ₹30,000 → refund of ₹20,000 after ITR filing. Refunds are processed within 20-45 days of ITR verification.
Form 26AS is your annual tax statement showing all TDS deducted on your behalf by employers, banks, tenants etc. Download from incometax.gov.in. Cross-check with Form 16 — they should match. Any mismatch must be resolved before filing ITR to avoid notices.
